Trade talks meant to avert the latest 50 percent US tariffs on Canadian goods collapsed on Friday, tipping high-stakes negotiations into a full-blown trade war. Prime Minister Mark Carney told his negotiators to walk away, saying, “We were not prepared to compromise Canada’s sovereignty or to undermine our key industries.”

Trump is using a 1930 law to sanction Canada over alleged discrimination against US businesses. Carney says Washington had demanded restrictions on Canada’s ability to strike trade deals with other countries and sought changes to Canadian laws protecting the French language.
